HBO Goes Exclusive in 2015
In 2015, subscribers of HBO on cable or satellite will only be able to subscribe to the network to an online only streaming service.
The Boston Globe reports from HBO chief executive Richard Plepler, “That is a large and growing opportunity that should no longer be left untapped. It is time to remove all barriers to those who want HBO. All in, there are 80 million homes that do not have HBO, and we will use all means at our disposal to go after them.”
Today, many television networks are in competition with online streaming sites such as Hulu, Netflix, and Amazon Prime. Both Netflix and Hulu have been producing some of their own TV series that stream exclusively on their perspective websites. Many networks are feeling the pressure and are trying to finds ways to keep up with modern day society.
Currently, there is HBO go for the “subscribers [that] can binge watch The Wire right after they finish watching the latest episode of Game of Thrones,” Forbes writes. HBO hopes that by making the switch, it will bring in twice the amount of viewers and the ability to create more programming.
