Comic-Con 2015: What You Need to Know

The Annual Geek Costume Ball known as Comic Con opens today in San Diego and lasts through the weekend.

The convention offers fans of comics books, science fiction and horror an opportunity to publicly appear as their favorite characters and mingle with others who share their interests. The main drawing cards, however, orbit around opportunities to meet movie/TV stars, learn about upcoming comic and movie/TV releases and purchase merchandise/memorabilia.

Like any other industry convention, Comic-Con also offers workshops and lectures on a wide-range of subjects.

What will people be talking about?

1. Fans desperate seek any scraps of intel on forthcoming blockbusters: Star Wars: The Force Awakens, X-Men: Apocalypse, Deadpool, The Hateful Eight, The Justice League (DC Comics’ version of The Avengers), and The Hunger Games: Mockingjay – Part 2.

2. DC Comics, which owns Batman, Superman, The Flash, Green Lantern, Wonder Woman and Aquaman, among other characters, will be on grand display as they roll out their “Justice League” franchise, a DC-version of Marvel’s Avengers. Justice League is due to rollout on 2017. This year’s convention should be a game-changer for DC, which has lagged behind Marvel in movie output.

3. Batman vs. Superman: Dawn of Justice represents a showdown between DC’s biggest, most lucrative characters. Costumes for both characters are already making the rounds on websites. The film is scheduled for a 2016 release.

4. Will the film version of “The Man from U.N.C.L.E” gain some momentum ahead of its August release? It’s not quite a movie re-make, but like the Mission: Impossible movies represents a modern version of a 1960’s TV series. Trailers look extremely interesting and, on the heels of a successful launch of the “The Kingsman: Secret Service” might coattail on another film’s success.
