Bicyclist Injured After Riding Into Path of Truck

A pedestrian was hit after riding his bike in the path of an oncoming car.

Kamron van Donkersgoed, 23, was driving west in the westbound curb lane of 38th Avenue North Monday night when a bicylist, Wilbert Smith, 58, rode into the path of the car. A witness says he would ride his bike into the road at random.

The front of the Chevrolet truck hit the bike, throwing Smith into the windshield of the car and then onto the ground. Smith was transported to Bayfront Health in St. Pete where he remains with life threatening injuries.

Alcohol was not a factor on the part of Van Donkersgoed, but Smith’s blood alcohol content was reported as .32.

There are no charges pending in this case.
