The ups and downs of fall temperatures are on full display for many cities east of the Rockies. In a span of a week, some locations will have seen temperature swings of up to 30 degrees, from cold to mild and then back to shivering again.

This is the result of a progressive weather pattern that earlier this week brought a shot of chilly air to many cities in the central and eastern states. Milder temperatures will return ahead of a new weather system this weekend into Monday, accompanied by widespread rain and a threat of severe thunderstorms. Following closely behind that system will be yet another shot of cold air, which will send temperatures tumbling below average once again.
