The storm’s maximum sustained winds Monday are near 50 mph (85 kph) with some strengthening forecast. The storm is expected to transition to a tropical storm by Tuesday.
Melissa is centered about 695 miles (1,120 kilometers) east-southeast of Bermuda and is moving northwest near 9 mph (15 kph).
The U.S. National Hurricane Center says large swells from the storm are already affecting parts of the Leeward Islands, Puerto Rico, Hispaniola and the southeastern Bahamas.
