2011 Hurricane Season Comes to an End

The official 2011 hurricane season ends today and although Florida was sparred any major storms, this years storm activities is still one for the record books.

In all, there were 19 named tropical systems formed in the Atlantic, with seven becoming hurricanes and three reaching major hurricane status, which means category three or higher.

St. Petersburg Times reporter, Emily Nipps, says the reason for the hurricanes missing us is due to wind shear and cooler water temperatures and that we have been lucky because we haven’t had a major storm in 6 years.

2011 will go into the record books as tired for the third highest total since record keeping began.
