Will Britain remain part of the European Union? British lawmakers have taken a first step toward having voters decide on the issue. They held their first debate Tuesday on a bill setting up a vote on European membership, with Prime Minister David Cameron gaining support from the Labour Opposition, but facing unrest within his own Conservative ranks.
Cameron says he will argue to remain in the EU if he succeeds in negotiating the terms of membership. Foreign Secretary Philip Hammond, however, says that expansion of the now 28-member bloc “has eroded the democratic mandate for our membership to the point where it is wafer-thin and needs to be renewed.”
