An estimated 75 Tea Partiers gave up lunch Tuesday afternoon to instead participate in a “flash rally” to protest the Internal Revenue Services’s targeting of conservatives and Tea Party groups seeking tax-exempt status during the 2010 and 2012 election campaigns.
“We called it a flash rally because it was quick enough for those who are working to come down and protest on their lunch break,” said Lisa Miller, founder of Tea Party of Washington D.C. and one of the rally’s organizers.
Encouraging the protestors alongside Miller were Andrew Langer, president of the Institute for Liberty, and Jenny Beth Martin, co-founder of the Tea Party Patriots. Langer and Martin called for auditing of the IRS and condemned what they view as the tax agency’s abuse of power.
“If you leave here today with no other lesson let it be this: government has no rights,” Langer said to enthusiastic applause.
