WASHINGTON, D.C. – Vermont Sen. Bernie Sanders needs to have a good day today or he will be in a delegate hole to Hillary Clinton that would make it nearly impossible to get the Democratic nomination.
Alabama, Arkansas, Georgia, Massachusetts, Minnesota, Oklahoma, Tennessee, Texas, Vermont, and Virginia. There will be a caucus in Colorado held tonight that is a Democratic gathering only.
Super Tuesday for Sanders will not be played out in the South where he is likely to lose big to Clinton. For Sanders to have a good Super Tuesday there is a path for him to come out of today’s contests as a real challenger if things break right for him. A good day for Sanders would be wins in Vermont, Massachusetts, Minnesota, Oklahoma and Colorado.
These are the states where he and Clinton are at least for the moment close. They also are the states with the smallest numbers of minority voters. No matter how many states he wins Sanders has the money to push forward in the long run.
But if he can win more than two states tonight then he continues to be a factor in the race. Today there will be for a whopping total of 865 delegates at stake on the Democratic side and the when the dust settle’s late tonight or early Wednesday morning, Sanders needs wins in at least three of the stay competitive. If he were to win four or more then he can make a real claim that the race is far from over.
