Obama Backs Markey

BOSTON — President Barack Obama is working to boost the candidacy of Senate hopeful Ed Markey, calling him a champion for middle class families and small businesses with, quote, “a track record you can trust.”

Obama says the longtime Democratic congressman also is strong and principled. He says the U.S. Senate could use more leaders like Markey.

Markey faces Republican Gabriel Gomez in a June 25 special election to replace John Kerry, who left the Senate this year to become secretary of state.

At a campaign rally Wednesday in Boston with Markey, Obama said Massachusetts has a long history of sending what he says are “smart, tough hard-working leaders” to the Senate.

He urged voters to add Markey’s name to the list.
