NYC Mayoral Candidate Breaking Ground

NEW YORK — New York City mayoral candidate Christine Quinn could break ground by being the first woman and the first openly gay person to lead the nation’s biggest city. But the City Council speaker says she’s not focused on potential firsts.

Quinn says it would be thrilling to able to be a pioneer in those ways. But she says she doesn’t spend a lot of time thinking about being a first anything as she runs in this year’s highly competitive mayoral race.

Quinn is currently the front-running Democrat in the race, though the gap has narrowed in recent months.

She’s been on the council since 1999 and its leader since 2006.

Earlier, she was a tenants’-rights advocate and ran an organization that works to combat violence against gay people and others.
