Senators Urge Obama To Deny Iran Nuclear Weapons

Obama_Iran_2013WASHINGTON (AP) — Two senators are urging President Barack Obama to stand firm in dealing with Iran despite President Hasan Rouhani’s overtures to the West.

Democratic Sen. Bob Menendez of New Jersey and Republican Sen. Lindsey Graham of South Carolina sent a letter to Obama on Monday urging him to restate the U.S. position that it will not allow Iran to develop a nuclear weapon. The president will be speaking this week at the annual U.N. General Assembly meeting.

Menendez and Graham said that despite Rouhani’s “nice words,” action by Iran is what matters. The two senators said Iran is not a friend whose words can be taken as a promise.

They argued that only a verifiable agreement with Iran over its disputed nuclear weapons program would be credible.
