Interview: VA Sect’y Shinseki Won’t Step Down

Eric Shinseki

Despite calls by some that he step down, embattled VA Secretary Eric Shinseki says he has no intention of doing so. He visited Capitol Hill on Thursday, saying he has not offered President Barack Obama his resignation. Speaker John Boehner said he is moving closer to calling for Shinseki to leave, but would not yet demand his resignation.

Also on the Washington front, Congress is stepping up efforts to root out misconduct at the VA with a move to boost fundraising for a nationwide investigation. House lawmakers told VA officials Thursday that they are expected to appear May 28 on Capitol Hill to answer a round of questions, otherwise they would face subpoenas. According to Shinseki, the nationwide audit of facilities, which began earlier this week, is “about halfway through.”
