TALLAHASSEE, Fla. (AP) — The chairman and vice chair of the Broward County Republican Party are criticizing a proposal that reshapes Republican Congressman Allen West’s district.
They’ve set up a website and have written an open letter to lawmakers on the Republican-controlled Senate and House committees that are proposing new political boundaries.
They say West’s District 22, which now is nearly evenly split between Democrats and Republicans, would lean more heavily Democratic if the proposal isn’t changed.
West is serving his first year in Congress and has captured national attention with inflammatory remarks and combative rhetoric, including a recent comment when he compared Democrats to a Nazi propagandist.
Voters passed constitutional amendments last year that require compact political districts that aren’t drawn to favor incumbents or parties.
