Mental Illness Rises, Psychiatrists Needed

NEW YORK (AP) — The Association of American Medical Colleges found that 59% of psychiatrists are 55 years or older. The 4th oldest of the medical specialties. Lack of state funding makes it hard to attract young professionals to this field.

It is an irony that troubles health care providers and policymakers nationwide: Even as public awareness of mental illness increases, a shortage of psychiatrists worsens.
