Woman Killed Avoiding Crash on Turnpike

WEST PALM BEACH, Fla. (AP) _ The Florida Highway Patrol says a woman died when she tried to avoid a crash in front of her on Florida’s Turnpike but was struck by a vehicle behind her.

The series of crashes happened around 5 a.m. Friday near the Okeechobee Boulevard exit in Palm Beach County, causing southbound lanes to close.

The Palm Beach Post (http://bit.ly/WbnJtZ ) reports the driver of a pickup truck hit the center median wall and spun to a stop in on the road.

A woman driving a Mazda either hit the truck or stopped just before hitting it.

FHP spokesman Tim Frith says another pickup truck then crashed into the Mazda.

The woman died at a hospital. The first driver was also taken to the hospital.

The investigation is ongoing.
