Clearwater Police have charged a woman with aggravated battery after she set her boyfriend on fire early this morning.

Police say Melissa Dawn Sellers, 33, got into an argument shortly before 2:30 a.m. with Carlos Ortiz Jr., 42, at 310 Gunn Ave. The two had been drinking, and Sellers doused the upper body of Ortiz with nail polish remover and then ignited him with either a lighter or burnt cigarette.

Ortiz was taken to Tampa General Hospital, where he is in critical condition. He sustained burns to his face, chest and shoulders.

Sellers left the scene before police arrived, but later came back from her stepfather’s residence nearby and was arrested.

She is at police headquarters for questioning, and will be taken to the Pinellas County Jail later this morning.
