PANAMA CITY, Florida – A Panama City woman who tried to shoot a water moccasin during practice for a youth football team was arrested for discharging the gun on school property.

Police say 30-year-old April Dawn DeMarco borrowed a gun from Miren Gregory after a water moccasin was spotted last week on a Bay High School field. As coaches tried to kill the snake with a stick, Gregory told DeMarco she had a concealed permit and a .380-caliber handgun.

The News Herald of Panama City reports children were about 20 to 50 yards away when Demarco fired the gun.

She was arrested Monday. Gregory was arrested Tuesday for carrying a concealed weapon and possession of a firearm on school property. It’s not clear whether they’ve hired lawyers.

Police didn’t know the fate of the snake.
