As of 2 a.m. EDT Thursday, a low pressure area over the northwestern Caribbean Sea was centered near the northeastern tip of the Yucatan Peninsula of Mexico, producing gale-force winds in the Yucatan Channel, according to the Hurricane Center.
Forecasters were giving the disturbance an 80 percent chance of developing into a storm during the next 48 hours.
“This system has the potential to become a tropical storm at any time today as it moves north-northwestward into the southern Gulf of Mexico,” the Hurricane Center said.
