BORDER CRISIS: SIGNS OF RELIEF?
With the clock ticking down to their summer recess, lawmakers in Washington are trying to come up with a plan to deal with the surge of illegal immigrants — particularly children — who’ve made their way into the country this year. In Texas, where the lion’s share of undocumented immigrants have entered the country, millions of dollars has already been spent to address the problem locally. And there are signs that it may be working. ABC’s Jim Ryan reports from Dallas/Fort Worth. ABC’s Jim Ryan will join us at 6:25 from Texas.

BRITAIN CALLS TOP LEVEL MEETING TO DISCUSS SPREAD OF EBOLA
Britain’s held a top-level government meeting to discuss the spread of the highly-contagious and deadly Ebola virus in West Africa. No cases have been found in the U-K. But, Foreign Secretary Philip Hammond says London is considering extra precautions, but is confident it could contain the disease if necessary. At this stage, Britain is looking at what additional measures could be taken and what steps might be needed if a British citizen in the affected part of Africa contracted the disease. Earlier this month, public health officials in the U-K issued guidance to doctors asking them to look out for possible cases in travelers returning from the affected countries. At 7:35 ABC’s Tom Rivers will join us.
WEATHER’S A KILLER. BUT NOT NECESSARILY FOR THE REASONS YOU THINK
It turns out it is the heat. And the cold. Extreme temperatures are more likely to kill you than what we typically consider “extreme” weather events. A new government survey says only six percent of the Americans who suffer weather-related deaths every year are killed in storms, in floods or by lightning. Exposure to cold is the No. 1 killer. Men and boys, the old, and the poor are most likely to be victims. At 8:10 ABC’s Scott Goldberg will join us for details.
WHITE HOUSE THREATENS TO VETO HOUSE BORDER BILL; HOUSE VOTES IN FAVOR OF VA REFORM, OBAMA LAWSUIT
The White House threatened Wednesday to veto the $659 million border bill crafted by House Republicans, calling it an insufficient bill that places “arbitrary and unrealistic demands” on the nation’s immigration system. The administration went on to slam the GOP bill as “patchwork legislation.” With just two days until August recess, concern intensifies that nothing will be finalized on the immigration front. However, there’s some good news on the VA front. House Republicans on Wednesday overwhelming voted in favor of the bipartisan, bicameral agreement to start reforming the Veteran Administration. And just in time for August recess…a sharply divided House authorized the GOP-led plan to sue President Obama alleging he exceeded his constitutional powers. At 8:55, ABC’s Ann Compton will join us.
