UK Scrambles To Offer Scots New Powers After Poll

The British government on Sunday responded to a shift in opinion polls toward a vote for Scottish independence, promising new powers for Scotland in areas including taxes, spending well and welfare if it decides to stay within the U.K.

The new poll released over the weekend shows supporters of Scottish independence are in the lead for the first time since the referendum campaign began. The surge ahead of the Sept. 18 votes raised the possibility that and outcome that seemed unlikely a few weeks ago is now thinkable.
