ORLANDO, Fla. (AP) — Students at the University of Central Florida are overwhelmingly in favor of the school creating a policy to encourage them to report alcohol-related emergencies.
That’s according to a question that was added to this week’s Student Government Association election, which ended Wednesday night. Officials say 80 percent of the 4,100 students who voted favor a medical amnesty policy that would protect students from punishment if they’re seeking medical help for someone who has had too much alcohol.
The issue was raised last month when 18-year-old student Ann Hefferin died after attending a Sigma Chi party with a fellow Delta Delta Delta member. Authorities have not yet determined what caused Hefferin’s death.
The Orlando Sentinel reports many colleges, including the University of Florida, have implemented such policies.
