BONITA SPRINGS, Fla. (AP) _ Turtle nesting season is starting early in southwest Florida.
The Fort Myers News-Press (http://newspr.es/IpSeV3 ) reports volunteers have spotted turtle nests in Captiva Island and Bonita Springs in the past week.
Turtle nesting season typically begins May 1 and runs through Oct. 31.
The newspaper reports that turtle experts say a milder winter kept the Gulf of Mexico warmer, which may have resulted in turtles nesting sooner than usual.
Experts say nesting usually starts when the water temperature reaches 80 degrees.
