The Polk County Sheriff’s office is advising motorists traveling in the area of Highway 60 East, west of Lake Wales Road South to avoid the area.

According to PCSO, a large portion of the train track which runs across Highway 60 in the east bound lanes has dislodged from the main track creating a significant road obstruction. The portion of the track includes concrete with rails which are raised above the road.

Deputies on scene report damage to several vehicles which have already struck the damaged tracks; there are no reported injuries.

CSX will be responding to investigate the damage and make necessary repairs. Currently, east bound traffic is closed. Deputies are working with the Florida Department of Transportation which will also be responding to assist in creating options for traffic flow in the west bound lanes.

It is unknown how long the delays will last. Officers are unsure what caused the rails to become dislodge and pull away from the tracks.

There won’t be any more details until after 8 a.m.
