Tash: Real Political Scandals Are Not What’s Illegal but What’s Legal

TAMPA BAY – CEO of the Tampa Bay Times Paul Tash discusses the acquisition of the Tampa Tribune. “For our readers we can make the Times a stronger paper. We’ve picked up some of their best writers and found areas that they were strong and we were weak.” Tash stated.

Tash discusses being 38 years in the newspaper business has corruption has changed, “In the old days it was more about the illegal corruption. Who was taking the bribe for the zoning vote? These days the real scandals are not what illegal but whats legal.” Tash said.

Tash discusses the idea of Freedom of Speech being shut down, “The multiplicity of platforms, channels, websites people are more able to tune into those things that they are most sympathetic and resonate to them. The splintering of audience means we are not as exposed to counter point of view.”

When asked about the perception that the Times is a liberal voice, Tash countered, “I recognize that that is perception. But over last several election cycles the Times has actually recommended more Republicans than Democrats for public office.”
