Tampa Police say a man drove his SUV off a bridge embankment near the Crosstown Expressway in attempt to end his life Sunday afternoon.
The vehicle went off the road and into the Palm River while driving southbound on Maydell Drive around 2 p.m. Nearby boaters were able to rescue the man, although he initially tried to swim away from them.
Dive crews located the submerged vehicle in about 14 feet of water. If the water had been any deeper, investigators believe the man would have drowned. No one else was in the car at the time.
Investigators located the man’s wife, who told them her husband was depressed due to family issues and had threatened to harm himself earlier in the day.
The driver was Baker Acted and transported to Tampa General Hospital.
No damage was done to the bridge.
