A Man Has Been Charged In Hillsborough Crash That Killed Child

A 38-year-old man was arrested Wednesday night following a vehicle collision that killed a 3-year-old.

Police say the accident happened on Wednesday at SR 674 and 27th Avenue around 8 p.m.

According to the Florida Highway Patrol, John Rutland was driving a Toyota Camry when it collided with a Chevy Utility Truck carrying seven people.

3-year-old Jacob Bustos was riding in the Chevy and died from his injuries. Two other passengers in the truck, Loylo Valencia, 10, and Valeria Rivera (a baby), received serious injuries from the crash.

Police arrested Rutland and charged him with DUI manslaughter, DUI with serious bodily injury, and driving under the influence with property.

According to the Florida Highway Patrol, the accident occurred when the Camry was traveling southbound on 27th Avenue when it entered the intersection of SR 674 and drove into the path of the Chevy.

Due to the impact the Chevy rotated and overturned.

Police say all seven people in the truck were transported to Tampa General Hospital. The driver of the Chevy, Marbella Valencia-Bustos, 20, and two passengers, Adrian Rivera, 1, and Jonathon Bustos, 4, received minor injuries from the crash.

Guadalupe Bustos-Benitez, 30, one other passenger in the truck, did not receive any injuries.

Rutland had two other passengers with him, Tatiana Rutland, 9, and Jeremiah Rutland, 5. No one in the Camry were injured in the crash.

FHP said everyone in the Chevy was wearing a seatbelt at the time of the crash.
