Lakeland Man Killed In Motorcycle, Bus Accident

A 28-year-old Lakeland man was killed Thursday morning after he crashed his motorcycle into the side of a school bus.

Lakeland Police say around 7:11 a.m., Officer Ace Williams saw the green Kawasaki motorcycle heading west on Parker Street pass on a double yellow line. Officer Williams turned around and caught up with the motorcycle at Parker Street and Massachusetts Avenue at a red light.

The motorcycle was turning south on Massachusetts Avenue and that’s when Williams turned his emergency lights on to stop the motorcycle. The motorcycle sped off and Williams stopped chasing the motorcyclist. He acknowledged this on his radio.

Two minutes later, Lakeland police got a 9-1-1 call in regard to a crash at Sikes Blvd and W. Lime Street involving a green motorcycle and a Polk County school bus.

The 2015 Kawasaki motorcycle was heading south on Sikes Blvd while the bus was in the left turn lane on W. Lime Street about to turn north on Sikes Blvd when the bike T-boned the bus. The rider, 28-year-old Niriel Cordero was killed at the crash.

No children were on the bus. The driver, Regina Elliott was not injured.

Police say Cordero was driving with a suspended license and speed was a factor in the crash.
