The day after Thanksgiving is what retailers call “Black Friday” and it’s known as the start of the holiday shopping season.
The term “Black Friday” may have originated in Philadelphia, where it was used to describe the heavy and disruptive pedestrian and vehicle traffic that would occur on the day after Thanksgiving.
More recently, merchants have used it to refer to the beginning of the period where retailers go from being in the red, posting a loss on the books, to being in the black, turning a profit.
