HILLSBOROUGH – The seventh President of Hillsborough Community College Dr. Ken Atwater discusses the expansion of the school, its relationships with local universities and putting students in the best area to succeed.
“Education for the 21st century. Working with the employees, working with competency All the jobs will require certain credentials.” Dr. Atwater states.
“We react to change a lot quicker. Hillsborough county 85% of our graduates stay in Hillsborough county. That equates $1.1b in local economic impact.” Dr. Atwater continues, “Thats defined by productivity with our students staying here.”
“The 21st century student is a great shopper and great consumer. They are looking for great quality.” Dr. Atwater says, “You think about the 21st century student they are shoppers and they are looking for the best buys for their dollars. HCC is one of the best buys.”
Atwater continues “We have the same number and competency requirement that you have to have at UF, USF, UT.”
“Thats the DNA of HCC. We have direct connect with our public and private communities. We have advisory boards that consists of people in the community.” Dr. Atwater informs. “They make sure our students meet the requirements needed to be hired.”
“Internships are key to getting people placed in jobs. Its literally an opportunity for employers to get time with students. Another area we are very active is apprenticeship.” Dr. Atwater continues, “Structured place ways its gets young people in a process that gets them into a career. Thats why FUSE is such an important program.”
