Tamp Bay Rays Headed To Court Over Tax Bill

The Tampa Bay Rays are taking the state to court over a tax bill.

Negotiations over payment of a $1.4 million bill for taxes owed by the Rays between 2006 and 2009 have been ongoing for years. The two sides agreed on the payment of about $850,000, leaving about half a million dollars in dispute.

Two issues are being contested. The Rays contend they should not have to pay taxes on meals that Centerplate, the concessionaire at Tropicana Field, serves in luxury suites, the Tampa Tribune said. The team also argues that it shouldn’t be asked to pay taxes on the portion of each ticket that it gives to the city of St. Petersburg.

The Rays are being represented by law firm Holland & Knight.
