Suspect Arrested In FL Priest Disappearance

MIAMI (AP) – Authorities say a man who’s a “person of interest” in the disappearance of a 71-year-old Catholic priest from St. Augustine, Florida, has been arrested in Aiken, South Carolina.

Law enforcement agencies in South Carolina and Florida say 28-year-old Steven James Murray was taken into custody late Wednesday while driving a car belonging to the Rev. Rene Robert.

Aiken County Sheriff’s spokesman Eric Abdullah says deputies and U.S. Marshals responded to Murray’s last known location Wednesday afternoon.

As they approached the vehicle, Murray drove away and crashed into a tree.

He then fled on foot.

Bloodhounds and a helicopter tracked Murray down and he was arrested.

He’s charged with aggravated fleeing and attempting to elude.

St. Johns County Sheriff’s spokesman Chuck Mulligan says Robert is still missing and foul play is suspected.
