Support for Florida’s 12th Public University

TALLAHASSEE, Fla. (AP) _ More than 70 community and business leaders have formed a community support group for Florida’s 12th public university.

The group announced Thursday is designed to boost Florida Polytechnic University in Lakeland.

It’s called Florida Poly Vision Inc.

The school exists on paper but doesn’t yet have any classrooms, students, administrators or faculty.

The Board of Governors, which oversees state universities, was in the process of converting the University of South Florida’s polytechnic branch into the stand-alone school when the Legislature stepped in.

At the urging of Senate Budget Committee Chairman JD Alexander, a Lake Wales Republican, lawmakers ordered an immediate transition.

That includes turning over a new campus, which is under construction, to Florida Polytechnic.

Alexander is one of several public officials involved in Florida Poly Vision.
