CARAVELLE RANCH, Fla. (AP) _ State wildlife officials are planning to cut down more than 1,000 pine trees on Caravelle Ranch in Putnam County to improve the
habitat for wildlife and plants.
Florida Fish and Wildlife Conservation Commission officials announced this week that the tree cutting will begin shortly and could take up to three years to complete, depending on weather conditions.
Experts say wildlife and plants need a variety of plants and trees of different age groups to survive and be healthy.
Removing some of the trees will allow more sunlight to reach the ground and encourage different types of vegetation to grow.
Officials estimate the timber from the trees will generate about $425,000.
The money will be used for habitat management on the state’s public wildlife management areas.
