Background on the Rowdies

The Rowdies were one of the first professional sports franchises in the Bay Area and to this day remain one of the most recognizable brands in soccer. Since their establishment in 1975 the team won the NASL Soccer Bowl Championship twice and has created an entertaining franchise with the Fannies, Wowdies and “Kick in the Grass” theme song.

In 2008 investors purchased the rights to a professional soccer franchise and named it FC Tampa Bay Rowdies with the intention to enter the new incarnation of the NASL. The newly established team began play in 2010.

One year later the team temporarily dropped the “Rowdies” name and moved to St. Petersburg. They would drop the FC and reacquire the Rowdies name in 2012 before winning their second NASL Soccer Bowl Championship.

In October 2016 the team announced that they will compete in the United Soccer League beginning with the 2017 season.

The Rowdies will kickoff their first season in the USL Sat. March 25th against Orlando City B at 7:30 p.m. at Al Lang Stadium in Downtown St. Petersburg.
