ST. PETERSBURG — A 51-year-old Gulfport man who died after he was found beaten and lying in the street was not the victim of a carjacking as police initially thought, authorities said.
Clinton Hattaway was found in the middle of the 2200 block of 47th Street S just after 6:30 p.m. Sunday.
St. Petersburg detectives now believe that Hattaway drove to the area of 22 Avenue S and 47th Street to meet someone he knew and got involved in a fight.
Police believe a third person got into Hattaway’s white 1999 truck and abandoned it at 4601 22 Avenue S.
Hattaway died at Bayfront Medical Center Monday morning from the beating. Police said they had some promising leads in the investigation but did not identify any suspects.
