Russia: Prostitutes Hike Prices As Rouble Falls

Russia

The oldest profession in Russia is apparently feeling squeezed impacted by the country’s collapsing currency. With the rouble sinking to new lows, prostitutes in the Russian arctic port of Murmansk are finding it difficult to make ends meet.

So, they’ve raised prices for their services by up to 40%, according to reports. The going rate for a couple of hours with a local sex worker in Murmansk was said to be about $60 t0 $130.

Now, it’s skyrocketing. “The cost of living is rising, and the girls can’t work at a loss,” said one brothel manager in Murmansk. Russian social media commentators are having a field day over the news.

ABC’s Tom Rivers joined us from London Thursday morning to discuss.
