A college student is in critical condition after he was stabbed in the head in what investigators are calling a suspected case of road rage.
Detectives say 62 year old Al Polanco was driving his 1995 Hyundai Accent south on Manhattan Avenue, just past the intersection at Waters when the driver of Honda Accord became upset and swerved in front of him.
The second driver, 20-year-old Wathson Adelson slammed on his breaks according to investigators, then apparently got out of his car and began arguing with Polanco. The argument quickly turned violent and investigators say the 62-year-old pulled out an ice pick, stabbing Adelson in the head and shoulder.
Adelson was taken to St. Joseph’s Hospital where he was listed in critical condition Monday evening.
10 News stopped at the house of the other driver who was not home. Family members of Al Polanco say their uncle had been gone all day and they were surprised to learn the news about what happened. They describe Polanco as a laid back old man who would defend himself, but not attack someone else.
No one has been charged in the incident but the Hillsborough County Sheriff’s Office says its investigation remains open.
