Rapping in the Rose Garden Just for the Hell of It

WASHINGTON – The creator of Broadway musical sensation ‘Hamilton,’ – Lin-Manuel Miranda – freestyled in the Rose Garden with the President of the United States in a video the White House posted this week. President Barack Obama flipped through the cue cards as Miranda riffed off the words.The president often gets a bad rap – but in this case, if you listen to Miranda’s freestyle –  I think he deserves it.

Can we leave behind the desire of presidents and high officials to be hip? We elect them because we want them to be serious, to do hard and complicated work, not to be rap stars. We don’t want you to produce viral videos. We want you to produce solid solutions.

Some might argue that Obama was trying to connect with young people. If so, what message was he trying to communicate? There was no overarching message to this rap performance. Even his appearance on “Between Two Ferns” had a specific point. Our next president needs to do more work and less freestyling.
