Man Dies In Train, Car Collision In Auburndale

Police say an Amtrak train hit a car around 6:14 p.m. Monday evening in Auburndale, resulting in one death. It happened at 1 Bloodhound Trail.

Officers arrived to find a 1994 Saturn 4-door on the tracks. The Amtrak train was facing eastbound while the car, facing south, was still touching the train.

The 44-year-old Auburndale man who was driving the car was trapped inside. Medics and bystanders tried to help him but he died because of the severity of his injuries, according to police. Police are trying to contact his family.

Before the accident, witnesses say the train was approaching an intersection and the arms were down. The Saturn was a few cars back, but went around traffic and tried to cross the tracks. That’s when he got hit.

The Amtrak train was carrying 158 passengers. It departed from Lakeland and was en route to Kissimmee when the crash happened.
