Anna Thomas had no criminal history, no interactions with child protective services and no history of mental illness, the authorities said. There was nothing that might provide an immediate explanation of what the police said was the killing of her 19-month-old son.

Detectives on Monday arrested Ms. Thomas, 20, in Brooklyn and charged her with murder and manslaughter in the death of the child, Justin Stephens. The police found the boy unconscious on Sunday night in an apartment on Ocean Avenue, a short walk from Brooklyn College, after responding to emergency calls describing a woman trying to throw herself from a fifth-floor window.

By the time they arrived, the police said, Ms. Thomas had backed away from the window. In the apartment, the police said, officers found a note in which Ms. Thomas said she killed Justin and was planning on doing the same to herself. The child was pronounced dead at New York Community Hospital.
