No More Warnings with Red Light Cameras

Starting tomorrow, November 1st, vehicles caught running a red light by the city’s 23 safety cameras will be fined $158.

Warning notices started going out on October 1st. Tampa joins more than 70 communities across the state by using the cameras to fine drivers who run red lights.

St. Petersburg started issuing citations on Saturday.

Last year, there were 371 crashes caused by drivers who ran a red light according to Tampa Police.

Each violation will be reviewed by a police officer before a violation is issued.

The hope is the cameras will alter driver behavior.

Red light cameras in Florida continue to face critics, including some lawmakers who have filed legislation to make the cameras illegal.
