No Grand Jury in Trayvon Martin Case

ORLANDO, Fla. (AP) _ Special prosecutor Angela Corey says she will not bring the Trayvon Martin shooting death before a grand jury.

The decision of whether to charge the teen’s shooter is now in her hands alone and eliminates the possibility of a first-degree murder charge.

Corey says her decision to skip the grand jury shouldn’t be considered a factor in determining whether charges will be filed against George Zimmerman, the neighborhood watch volunteer who has admitted to fatally shooting the unarmed
Martin.

A grand jury had been set to meet Tuesday in Sanford, about 20 miles northeast of Orlando.

Corey has long had a reputation for not using grand juries if it wasn’t necessary.

In Florida, only first-degree murder cases require the use of grand juries.
