New trial date set for Nicholas Lindsey

The teenager accused of killing St. Petersburg police Officer David S. Crawford is now set to go to trial on March 19.

In a court hearing Monday, Pinellas-Pasco Circuit Judge Thane Covert set Nicholas Lindsey Jr.’s trial date. Covert also asked attorneys to update him on their progress in reviewing evidence and interviewing potential witnesses for the trial.

The trial originally was set to begin this week, but defense attorneys had said they needed more time to prepare.

Police say Crawford stopped Lindsey while investigating a call of a suspicious person. They say Lindsey pulled out a semiautomatic weapon he had bought for $140 and fired at least four times.

Lindsey was picked up the next day and interviewed by police.

Both his mother and father were present for portions of the interview. Police say Lindsey at first denied involvement, then admitted to the killing.

“I just started shooting,” he said in his videotaped statement to police.
