Motorcyclist Dies After Being Hit In Lakeland

Hillsborough police report that a motorcyclist has died after he was hit by a woman in Lakeland. The date and time of the crash was not specified.

32-year-old Jessica Alexander of Lakeland was southbound on Coronet Road in her 2006 Saturn Ion. She slowed and attempted a left turn onto Cason Road in Lakeland, entering the path of the northbound motorcycle.

The motorcycle, a 2000 Suzuki Motorcycle, struck the front left corner of the vehicle, which caused the motorcycle and rider, 50-year-old Tommy Jerkins of Plant City, to travel 130 feet coming to rest in a ditch.

Jerkins died at the scene due to the injuries sustained in the crash. Although no indicators of impairment were evident, Alexander submitted to a voluntary blood draw to verify that she was not impaired, according to police. The investigation continues into this crash.

The motorcycle had been reported stolen on February 15, 2014 and had not been recovered from the Dover area of the county, police say.
