BATON ROUGE, La. (AP) — The U.S. Justice Department has launched a civil rights investigation into the fatal shooting of a black man by police officers in Baton Rouge, Louisiana, that was captured on video. Police say a gun was taken from 37-year-old Alton Sterling after he was killed early Tuesday in the parking lot of a convenience store where he sold homemade music CDs.

WASHINGTON (AP) — House Republicans have summoned FBI Director James Comey to Capitol Hill today to answer questions about his decision not to recommend charges against Hillary Clinton for her handling of classified emails. On Wednesday, Attorney General Loretta Lynch said she accepted Comey’s recommendation and the case would be closed.

WASHINGTON (AP) — Donald Trump is meeting behind closed doors today with rank-and-file congressional Republicans. The gatherings come less than two weeks before a GOP convention that a number of leading Republicans are skipping, including some in Congress. Some Republicans also plan to skip today’s meetings with the presumptive Republican presidential nominee.

TALLAHASSEE, Fla. (AP) — A Florida court on Wednesday rejected a bid by a former U.S. congressman to get ethics charges dropped against him. But it’s still unclear if former U.S. Rep. David Rivera, a Miami Republican who is running this year for the state Legislature, will ultimately have to pay the nearly $60,000 in fine and penalties recommended by the state’s ethics commission.

TALLAHASSEE, Fla. (AP) — Florida Gov. Rick Scott says he’ll push state legislators to spend millions to battle the massive algae bloom fouling some of the state’s southern rivers and beaches. Scott announced Wednesday that he’ll ask legislators to create a grant program to aid homeowners who want to switch from septic tanks to central sewer systems.

FORT LAUDERDALE, Fla. (AP) — The father of a legally armed black musician who was fatally shot by a Florida police officer is suing the officer and his department. The father of Corey Jones filed the state lawsuit Wednesday against since-fired Officer Nouman Raja and the Palm Beach Gardens Police Department seeking unspecified damages.

SAN DIEGO (AP) — The San Diego County medical examiner says a Navy SEAL instructor repeatedly dunked a trainee as he was struggling during a pool exercise, ruling his death a homicide. An autopsy report says 21-year-old Seaman James Derek Lovelace died of drowning, with a heart problem as a contributing
factor. The report says instructors are supposed to create adverse conditions by splashing and yelling at the students, but they’re reportedly advised not to dunk or pull students underwater.

ORLANDO, Fla. (AP) — An Uber driver in Florida was arrested after deputies say he refused to transport a group of blind people and their service dogs. According to news outlets, citing an arrest report, 60-year-old Simon Pierre Andre Nau was picking up Robert Stigile, who’s blind, and other blind people in Stigile’s group Monday night in Orlando. Stigile says that when Nau showed up, he said, “I don’t take dogs.” Stigile explained the dogs were service animals and Nau allegedly replied “I don’t care.”
