More Skimmers Found On Bay Area Gas Pumps

An inspection by state agriculture officials turns up half a dozen more electronic skimmers attached to gas pumps in Hillsborough and Pinellas counties.

The skimmers are installed surreptitously by thieves who can then record the names and numbers of credit and debit cards used by customers at that pump.

A new bill in the Florida legislature would impose stiffer penalties for use of skimmers and would require gas stations to enhance security.

One new technology stops fuel flow to a pump that has been opened to install a skimmer.

But it’s expensive and so not widely used.
