LEBRON TELLS HEAT HE’LL BECOME FREE AGENT
LeBron James is heading to free agency. James has told the Miami Heat that he will opt out of the final two years of his contract, according to his agent. He’ll become a free agent on July 1. A person who has been briefed on the matter and is familiar with James’ thinking says he has not decided where he’ll play next season.
2 DEAD, 7 INJURED IN LIBERTY CITY SHOOTING
Police say a man and woman were killed and seven others were wounded following an early morning shooting in Miami’s Liberty City neighborhood. A Miami police news release says that 29-year-old Kevin Richardson and 26-year-old Nakeri Jackson were killed in the early Tuesday morning shooting. Police responded to reports of multiple gunshots around 2:15 a.m.
FLORIDA INCREASES AGE REQUIREMENT FOR CAR SEATS
Parents will have to use a car seat for children up to 5 years old under a new law approved by Gov. Rick Scott. Scott on Tuesday signed a bill that increases Florida’s car seat requirement from 4 years old to 5 years old. Starting in January, parents will no longer be allowed to use seat belts for children under 5. The new law allows parents to use booster seats to meet the requirements.
1st CASE OF MOSQUITO-BORNE DISEASE LOGGED IN POLK COUNTY
Polk County health officials confirmed the first case of the mosquito-borne disease chikungunya fever in the county. Officials say the victim had recently visited the Caribbean.
FIGHTER JET CATCHES FIRE ON PANHANDLE BASE RUNWAY
Military officials are investigating how an F-35 fighter jet caught fire during takeoff from an Eglin Air Force Base runway. Officials say the jet — estimated to cost around $98 million — caught fire on Monday. No one was hurt, and firefighters were able to put out the fire with suppressing foam. The pilot was able to shut down the engine and get out of the plane after noticing the fire.
