Miami: Two Parks Closed

MIAMI (AP) — Two Miami parks are closing until officials can determine whether soil is contaminated.

On Monday the city announced workers with the county’s Department of Environmental Resource Management will collect samples from Billy Rolle Domino Park in Coconut Grove and Southside Park near Brickell.

The Miami Herald (http://hrld.us/1c4lwpB ) reports the city has had ongoing issues with soil contamination. Last month, two other parks were shut down after tests found the soil was contaminated with toxic metals. In September, the county ordered the city of Miami to test all 112 of its parks for contamination.

In December, state Department of Health officials told residents the toxins found at Blanche Park don’t pose a health risk. But officials plan to replace the soil with two feet of new soil and add a liner.
