Carlos Bujanda: From the Bujanda family, which founded the Rioja winemaking company Familia Martinez Bujanda in 1889. Today he is the company’s chairman. The company now owns five estate wineries, one of which is in Grandes Pagos de Espana: Finca Valpiedra (“finca” means “estate”).
Valpiedra the only Rioja member of Grandes Pagos (Rioja is dominated by negociants — it is very rare to have a single-estate Rioja). The Valpiedra vineyard is in a very unique location — in a meander of the Ebro river, so it is surrounded on 3 sides by water. The soil has lots of pebbles from the riverbed, which trap heat and enhance grape ripening. There’s a beautiful aerial picture of the vineyard here (it’s the farthest left): http://www.winebow.com/winery.php?id=1140
